Having spent a significant part of my 83 years in rural communities, I would agree with you that Democrats MUST BE physically present year round if we expect to win elections there. We have to realize that mass media and the internet are doing us no favors, and that we need to be there in flesh and blood to counter the myths and lies that are spread. Not every strategy works in every area, but we must be on the ground to figure this out.
Thank you for your analysis. I've lived in rural Ohio and volunteered on the Obama campaigns. It was an exciting time to have Democratic leadership engage with rural volunteers and it's a shame it didn't last. The "Barns for Obama" campaign was a fun program that let rural Democrats know they weren't alone. I now live in rural Oregon, and just want to remind everyone that there are also tons of progressive voters in rural red counties in blue states all over the country. It's not just the rural local parties in red states that need support, there are so many of us with MAGA officials in blue states. Even our own state parties write us off. We could use some more support, too.
It's my observation that "the Democratic Party" is in a polite civil war, between the Old Guard who have the Big Donor routine down and the progressive, fight back faction that knows the status quo ain't working, that the Old Guard system has run its course and the American people are hurting--and the progressives know why. And they know that centrist/moderate-Dem tinkering around the edges will not fix it.
The Dem Party has a *terrible* status with the public, but there are also many outstanding candidates who get it. I hope enough of them win that we can shift away from consultant-driven (profit-making) focus-group-obsessed messaging. And get out there and fight like hell to take our country back from the oligarchs and the neoliberals.

The article made it clear. Perhaps it's easier for me because I already know. Boots on the ground is what solves the problem. Bishop Barber (Moral Mondays) recently talked about the dire situation in NC where the MAGA-confederate state legislature gerrymandered the "Black Belt." Barber & his people asked voters: Why is turnout low? Why don't you vote? A: "Because no one ever came to talk with us."
So the uncomfortable solution to the problem is to SHOW UP. Listen to voters--don't tell them what you're going to do for them until you learn what they need.
Oh, and if door knocking in rural areas really isn't an option, $$$ for local Dem candidates is always good. Rural Groundgame is an *excellent* operation, much much better than consultant-driven operations.
Amen to all of this but also keep in mind that where many think "rural" means barns it also increasingly means "exurbs" which are an hour or more from a metro but are being ignored, and it also means a lot of decaying towns and elderly voters who are hurting for infrastructure, for help, for someone to actually give a damn.
That's why lurid tales of money being wasted by yuppies work so well, many rural voters don't have a lot and see boarded up windows in small towns, or are driving an hour plus out of town to live because they cannot afford anything closer. Democrats could show up and fight back against rural hospital closures or fight for the rights of farmworkers (Trump is gutting safety standards). They could fight for rural investment in otherwise dying small towns. Hell they could fight for anything

I agree - I canvassed and spoke with many Muslim people. We all were disappointed that Harris campaign didn’t address the genocide directly at the DNC convention. Many of the people also felt duped that Harris was the automatic candidate due to funding and the processes of the primary was eliminated. Another group wouldn’t vote for a woman and/or a woman of color. I was reading an article about Hillary Clinton’s campaign & the funding control of the DNC to push the Sanders camp out of contention - this also pissed off many young voters. But systematically I have read that the Democrats left the rural voter behind for decades- this isn’t new information for the DNC. This is why I firmly believe that we need to clean house with all of the establishment democrats because they keep on doing the same thing over & over but expect a different result. The only thing that is truly helping the party now is Republicans & Trump are burning everything down to the ground.

Yep! I live in VA, and Harriss didn't even campaign here or other states where they were sure they'd win. Everything went into swing states: working class white voters who will not 'come back' until the Dems get out of their college-educated safe spaces. While 10s or 100s of million$ were spent on swing states (where Dems lost lost lost), nothing was provided to the Dem Party in LA, for instance. And I'll bet other Southern states.
I canvassed for the redistricting campaign--which IMO wasn't very well run until Rural Groundgame got into the act. The campaign lit was wordy. And nothing in Spanish! Palm to forehead.

You think what you like but if you do not live in the middle of one of the square miles with only 47 residents in this district, if you are closer than 25 minutes to a grocery store or your workplace, if you have cell reception and broadband, you have no clue what most people are really worried about here.

You are absolutely right, I would argue this is even happening in suburbs and exurbs which the Democrats seem to avoid as well. I would say "if only they were warned" but the fact is that so many people warned them, no doubt you did as well in the campaign, that Democrats won't win until the scoleoretic leadership and the grifting consultants are gone.
Read the book Harvest the Vote! It is a longer explanation of the folly of ignoring rural voters. I live in a rural township and recently did a turf with 30 doors. It took 7 hours to do 30 doors. I was lucky - my neighbor was my driver and she has an electric car. Almost half the people weren’t home too and we went out on a weekday after work hours twice. I’ve knocked thousands of doors over the years- small city, villages, and rural. I have always regretted the carbon footprint we all are planting from presidential candidates jetting crisscross across states to people like me. In 2018 we tried to find people within each of our counties 56 precincts to step up and captain.. with the ask to gather neighbors to be a team to knock doors. It was very difficult, and despite 100s of phone calls, meetings etc we ended up with less than half those roles filled. I am reminded at this moment as a retired nurse ( hospice for years) of how a patient plagued with constipation ( dehydrated, immobile, on opioids) would quit taking a laxative.. “it isn’t working!! “ And I’d explain yes it’s helping we just need to add another one to the mix. The model of having people who were born and raised in a rural area makes the most sense bc there is some attitude “ you are an outsider” even when you’ve lived on your dusty road for 30 years! This also addresses it’s getting very expensive knocking these doors re gas price but also warming planet. Perhaps just because we felt “ it isn’t working” we gave up too soon. In 2020 btw we felt totally forgotten, the help from on high was minimal.. and between myself and my partner who headed neighborhood campaign it felt like it became a nearly full time job. My partner lost her husband to a tractor accident in July and took a mere week off bc the stakes were too high not to get back up on the donkey. I will never forget her resolve. That tragedy and a season that followed with January 6th played live for hours on the news and all the big events in my life feed me the motivation to Never Give Up .. despite the internal battle that says WTF we are up against Goliath.
Look at what Graham Platner is doing in his Maine senate race. He's starting in one of the most rural counties in the most rural state in the country. Look at the issues he's addressing. Look at the crowds he gathers. That's what works in our rural places.
The Democrats have been acting neo-liberal (neither new, nor liberal) for multiple decades, and that was a problem, but the biggest problem was that Biden was, probably, forced out. He was 2 years older and did not get any credit for being more lucid than the opposition. Democrats and socialism (New Deal, Keynesian economics, etc...) pulled the USA out of the Great Depression, and we should have stuck with it. Also, too many rural, and other people, are misogynist and racist enough to cause Kamala to be insufficient to the task. Voters FAFO'd, as did the Democratic party. If you're tired of our current oligarchy then register and vote us out of it! Let the Democrats know what rural folks need and let 'em know if they're getting it done. Democracy is not self-starting or self-sustaining...
Rural County Dem co-chair here. This is spot on, and I am in the 'blue' state of New York, which has large swaths of red voters in rural areas. Pretty much everything above Westchester County is rural except for a handful of cities. And yet even this year, our 'own' party threatened legislation to redistrict our judicial district in a way that harms rural voters but benefits urban areas. Grateful that the Governor pocket vetoed that, but expect it to make a comeback effort. Pretty exhausting, tbh. Somewhere along the line, building and growing the party gave way to targeted 'sure thing' zero-sum campaigns. More is spent on urban primaries here than rural congressional races - by far. And party messaging here? Non-existent. Thank you for this analysis.

I am not saying it is not a serious issue, but really no urgency about it in rural areas , more in urban or college towns. Issues in rural areas tend to be more 'kitchen table' - food, water, jobs, healthcare. We have a Congresswoman here, Stefanik, making bank with calling protests antisemitic. And NO messaging from the Dems on it at all. That issue is only compounded in rural areas because there is only one 'voice'. So if we want it addressed, addressing it in rural areas is even more important.

I am not saying it is not a serious issue, but really no urgency about it in rural areas , more in urban or college towns. Issues in rural areas tend to be more 'kitchen table' - food, water, jobs, healthcare. We have a Congresswoman here, Stefanik, making bank with calling protests antisemitic. And NO messaging from the Dems on it at all. That issue is only compounded in rural areas because there is only one 'voice'. So if we want it addressed, addressing it in rural areas is even more important.
